I have heard some people complain she didnt win the AA in LA. Yet she fell on bars in team fianls, had an extra swing on bars in team finals, and ommited a required handstand move on compulsory beam. Yet still lost by only half a tenth. It is a joke people think she was robbed of anything here. If she had 1 less of her 3 huge mistakes she would have won AA comfortably, and that is despite that she is a boring and unexciting gymnast. If anything her scores were inflated by her name.

Watching tapes of Szabo she looks like one of the most boring, personality-less and least creative Romanian greats of the 70s and 80s. More in the vein of Gogean, Milosovici, and Olaru than in the vein of people like Commaneci, Eberle, Silivas, and Potorac. I cant believe she won 4 golds here. She must have been helped by the boycott as she isnt that great.

Szabo was given a gift in the compulsories, she deserved a 9.6

I hate to be gleeful of peoples misfortune but thank goodness she fell on bars. Without that mistake I bet the judges would have crowned her with a 6 gold sweep- team, AA, vault, bars, beam, and floor. Without the fall on bars she probably would have deserved the AA gold, but the 4 event final golds would have all been gifts in this case. Szabo is closer to the 80s version of Gina Gogean than trendsetters and charismatic Romanian stars of this decade like Silivas, Dobre, and Commaneci.

Szabo is way overrated. She is a very good solid gymnast but she is boring, has no personality, and she is a choker who falters under pressure. I have no idea why there is so much wuzrobbed over her losing the AA gold here when she so barely lost it because of a fall on bars in the team event All 3 of her event final golds in LA should have been silvers instead IMO. Retton deserved vault gold, Pauca should have had beam gold on her own not tied, and McNamara deserved floor gold.

What a strange case that pauca girl was!she was completely unknown before the olympics she won the all around bronze there a beam gold and then she vanished into thin air again...

Actually Ecaterina Szabo's compulsory routine was stringently scored at 9.75. She committed some errors but her technical prowess, form and fluidity were exemplary. Szabo was adequately scored and deserved the gold with Simona Pauca. If you want to contemplate something questionable, see how inflated and generous the USA gymnasts were scored in compulsories. Julianne McNamara and Mary Lou Retton were given 9.85s for ordinary compulsory routines on BB. Ridiculous!

A 9.900? I just can't believe it. Its underscored. Anyways, you just can't get ties nowadays. It has to be broken so someone has to win and other will mop in tears.

Although Pauca had some form errors, she seemed well ahead of her time in BB and Szabo's error in compulsories alone should have afforded Simona the beam gold outright.

Pauca was robbed of the beam gold by herself. Szabo's compulsory beam routine mistake alone should have been enough to make of this.

Again, really enjoyed these clips, thanks for putting in the time to finding them and putting them up! It seems really strange to me that Szabo managed to tie for gold. Pauca's routine was so much more complex, innovative, and was performed with far more precision and amplitude. She was way ahead of her time, and definitely deserved the medal on her own.
